High Country has some of Australia’s most beautiful alpine scenery. From rugged mountains to rolling snow plains, rushing rivers to gentle lakes, here are some of the best vantage points from which to take in the views.
Danny's Lookout - Mt Hotham
Drive the spectacular Great Alpine Road from Bright to Omeo. The road winds its way across the back of rugged mountain ranges and offers panoramic views from the top of Mt Hotham as far as the eye can see.
Mount McKay
For some of the best views of the high country, take a detour off the Bogong High Plains Road near Falls Creek, and follow the road near the Rocky Valley Dam up to Mount McKay. At 1,849 metres above the sea level, it is the highest spot in Australia accessible by road. This road is closed during winter due to snow cover.
Tawonga Gap
At 880 metres above sea level the Tawonga Gap lookout provides incredible views to Mount Bogong (Victoria's highest mountain) and over the Kiewa Valley. A little further down the Tawonga Gap road is Sullivans Lookout providing similar, yet closer views.
Mt Stirling
Craig's Hut near Clear Hills on Mt Stirling is a popular destination for horse and mountain bike riders as well as tourers. Accessible via the Circuit Road on Mt Stirling, or via the Howqua Gap Track across from Mount Buller, the hut can also be reached via cross-country ski trails during winter.
In the high country be aware of prevailing weather conditions. It is important to check road conditions as there can be seasonal road closures.
