About Australia

“ This is your captain speaking we are now crossing the coastline of  Australia, welcome home to all the Australians onboard, and welcome to our visitors from overseas”. – what every Australian returning home loves to hear.

Australia is the world’s largest island continent.

A population of 20 million plus, a multicultural society, a democracy, where freedom of speech, freedom of religion, racial tolerance, make up the Australian culture.

First inhabited by the aboriginals, the arrival of the first European settlers took place about the time of the American War of Independence.

Australia was granted independence from England in 1901. At that time Australia’s non aboriginal population was significantly “British Isles” predominated.

Following cessation of the hostilities associated with the second world war, there was a massive influx of immigration from all corners of Europe, this was followed by a relaxation of the “White Australia Policy” which resulted in large immigration of peoples from Asia. More latterly there has been an increase in refugees from those war torn areas of the Middle East and Africa.

Australia is made of six states and two territories. Each has its own democratic elections that are generally held every three to four years.

The major proportion of the population will be found along the eastern seaboard.

North of Australia features tropical rainforest. Central Australia is sparsely populated and can be described as semi arid to desert. The south and east of Australia is typically mediterranean climate and vegetation.

The northern east coast is protected by the Great Barrier Reef one of the natural wonders of the world.
