Old Timers Mine, Coober Pedy, is an original opal mine dating back to 1916. The old time miners had backfilled the shafts, hiding the mine below. Who knows why they never returned to dig out the opal still waiting.
Then in 1968 the hidden mine was discovered accidentally when an underground home extension broke through, revealing much precious opal which is still there for you to see today. Take a self guided tour of this Multi award tourist attraction tourist attraction, through this historical Old Timers Mine and experience the working life of the pioneer opal miners.
Old Timers Mine, winner of the 2008 South Australia Heritage and Cultural Tourism award, is a must see attraction if you want to soak in the History of South Austalia.
